Millwall confirm Matija Sarkic dies aged 26

Devastated Millwall confirmed the heartbreaking news that goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has died at the age of 26.

The Montenegro international made 54 appearances in two seasons for the Lions, having joined last summer following a season at Wolves.

Sarkic had started all three of his country’s Nations League matches during the current international window, last playing for Montenegro in a 1-1 draw with Romania on June 14.

A Millwall club statement read: “Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Šarkić has passed away at the age of 26.

“The club can confirm our goalkeeper died suddenly on Tuesday 27th June 2023 after falling ill at his apartment in Croatia.

“Matija joined the Lions in the summer of 2022 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and quickly established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Sky Bet Championship.”
