How the WNBA Draft Order is Determined
WNBA Draft Structure
The WNBA Draft consists of three rounds, with each round featuring 12 picks. The order of team selections in each round is determined based on the previous season's standings.
Determining the First Round Order
The first four picks in the first round are determined through a draft lottery among the four teams that missed the playoffs. The teams with the worst records have the highest chances of winning the lottery.
After the lottery picks are determined, the remaining teams select in reverse order of their previous season's standings.
Determining the Second and Third Round Order
The order for the second and third rounds is also based on the previous season's standings. The team with the worst record selects first in the second round, followed by the second-worst team, and so on.
This order is repeated for the third round, ensuring that the teams with the weakest performances in the previous season have the opportunity to select the top prospects available.
